Remote Working

As an immediate and direct consequence of this awful pandemic, businesses have been forced to move overnight to a remote working model. In order to be able to weather this storm, companies will have to adapt quickly and creatively. Rather than merely transferring existing office-based practices to the home environment, they will need to adopt new modalities that not only support but favour the distributed model of working.

The first 3-6 months of remote working were about 'getting the job done'. Now businesses need to look at establishing robust, clear, and effective models.

I work with businesses to embed new ways of working including the development and communication of a remote working policy, 1-2-1 business coaching, and practical support to talent, as well as the identification and implementation of relevant tools and development programmes.

My focus for business coaching is with Junior to mid-level employees. If you are currently struggling with a distributed model of working, here are my 5 top tips to help you:

  1. Ensure you and your line manager have clearly defined goals and outcomes for the week. That way you know what success looks like at the end of the week.

  2. Have regular check-ins booked into the diary with your line manager and/or a mentor. These don't have to be about work but can be about discussing any mental health issues or general WFH challenges you are currently experiencing and the impact they are having on your work/life.

  3. Agree on a comms style and frequency of contact - establish how and when you ask for help or provide updates to your line manager and/or project manager.

  4. Build resilience - Rhythm (keeping a schedule each day), exercise (going for a walk, run etc), and pace are key.

  5. Don't be hard on yourself. Seek feedback and ensure you celebrate success.
